The stretch between Helmet Circle and Vijay Crossroads was badly potholed due to construction of metro rail along the route. The Mirror Check found two damaged model roads but rain was not the culprit. The AMC had constructed 60-ft wide roads at a cost of Rs 183 crore to increase connectivity to BRTS, airport and SG Highway. Mirror conducted a check on stretches from Pavapuri-SAL Hospital-Judges Bungalow-Karnavati Motors Airport Circle-Dafnala-Shahibaug Underpass LD Engineering College-Vijay Crossroads-Usmanpura Underpass Pakwan Crossroads- Mansi Crossroads-Keshavbaug Helmet Circle-Commerce Six Roads Memnagar-Surdhara Circle-SG Highway New Cloth Market-Khokhra Bridge and Hatkeshwar-Kangaroo Circle Road. Though the defect liability (a period of time following completion during which a contractor is obligated to fix defects in project) of these stretches ceased in 2017, they are still in excellent condition compared to other city roads, the Mirror Check revealed. The eight model roads were constructed in 2011-12 with a defect liability of five years. Why can’t all our roads be of the same quality? AMC officicials must be held accountable for every accident caused due to faulty roads.”ĭefect liability expired but quality maintained Only model roads are smooth and relatively non-damaged.

Harish Patel, a resident of Navrangpura, said, “There was a time when we Amdavadis would boast to people in other states of how smooth our roads were. The civic body must utilise the funds to build all roads along the model road standard,” said Shilpa Desai, a resident of Gurukul. “If AMC has the technology to make good quality roads, why is it depriving citizens of them? We pay our taxes regularly but have to damage our spine and our vehicles on broken roads. Interestingly, repairs were carried out on several newly constructed roads while model roads were less affected. To this, Amdavadis have just one question: “Why are we being made to suffer when the civic body has the technology to create quality roads?” According to an AMC report, it undertook patchwork repairs on 14,000 damaged spots in the past nine days. AMC claims model roads are in good condition because they were built at a cost of Rs 9,000 per running metre as opposed to Rs 5,000 per running metre spent on other roads. And yet, the experience of driving on city’s ‘model’ roads couldn’t be more different.Ī Mirror Check revealed that while commuters face a bone-jarring ride on most city roads that are still under defect liability, it is smooth sailing on eight of city’s ‘model’ roads even though its defect liability expired a while ago. Two-wheeler riders feel like trapeze artistes performing a balancing act on a rope while navigating such risky routes. What’s left behind are thin strips of tar flanked by huge potholes. That’s till monsoon arrives and washes it all away.

We, Amdavadis, are very proud of our smooth city roads.
